Conservation and Agriculture: We Need to Bridge the Gap

Hi! My name is Caoimhe and I’m a second year PhD student at University College Dublin. My research is focused on the effects of intensive farming and human activity on wildlife health. While I suppose at heart I am a wildlife conservationist, my PhD work is centred around molecular microbiology, bioinformatics and policy analysis. My background is a mish-mash of disciplines, from my BSc in Biomedical Science to an MSc degree in Wildlife Conservation with zoology, geology, agricultural science marketing sprinkled in there for good measure!

Being involved in the fields of wildlife conservation, agriculture and medical sciences has made me realise that not only is there is a distinct lack of communication between disciplines, there is a sort of blame-game ongoing, that I think we all know is helping no one. So I'm on a mission to bridge these gaps between the conservation, and agricultural and scientific communities. I’ve started this blog to share details and results of my PhD work, and to shine a light on the scientific space that exists between conservation and agricultural policy in Ireland. I believe that effective communication is key to driving positive change, and I believe all sides want what's best to protect our native landscape. But we have got to stop pointing fingers!

Through reports of my own work and research going on around the world, discussions of relevant news stories, and more often than not, just a chat, I want to help in breaking down the barriers that too often separate agriculture and conservation to foster collaboration and create a more sustainable future for all.
